WHY DOES IT MATTER?

These conditions cannot be stretched away or alleviated for the long term through passive manipulation. Stretching often causes muscles to become tighter, in effect worsening your muscle pain. Medication may block the pain but it does not address the root cause or movement dysfunctions caused by the tight muscles causing the pain. Passive methods such as chiropractic and massage therapy only offer temporary relief.

While most pain relief methods—such as physical therapy, massage therapy, surgery, stretching, acupuncture or drugs—focus on the one specific area of pain (e.g. the neck, hip, shoulder, back), Hanna Somatic Education understands that pain in one part of the body is part of a larger pattern of muscular dysfunction. Hanna Somatic Education is not passive therapy. Hanna Somatic Education not only teaches you Somatic Movements (pandiculations) to retrain your brain, but also teaches you to be aware of how stress affects your body and what your body’s postural adaptation and habits are.

THE SOMATIC DIFFERENCE

WHAT DO ALL OF THESE CONDITIONS HAVE IN COMMON?

1. They are caused by chronic muscle tension and contraction that is below our level of awareness.

2. They are all neuromuscular in nature.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

All of these conditions are neuromuscular in nature, meaning there is a communication issue between the brain and the body. The brain has forgotten how to  control muscles in your body to tell them to relax because of injury, stress, and trauma over the course of your life. Because they are neuromuscular, meaning they involve your brain, they can be changed, alleviated, and improved through a learning process which involves your brain. Hanna Somatic Education, which helps your brain remember how to relax and control your muscles for pain relief, greater flexibility and mobility, and improved muscle function for ease of movement. Because you are actively participating and engaged in the process you can create new habits.
